I FORGOT TO POST THIS ONE.

I was reviewing my assignment, and I realized that I forgot to post this article! I'm so sorry!

This is an article about students visa's, and how the United States, in particular ICE, has been cracking down on language schools for undocumented workers.

Liberan a Los Presos Politicos

Gloria Estefan's speech at fundraiser hosted for President Barack Obama

Welcome everyone to our home!
Emilio, Emily and I are very happy that you’re here and we hope you very much enjoy this afternoon!
When our parents brought us to the United States as children they never imagined that the country that had opened its arms to them at a time of crisis would eventually become their country and in turn, our country. They came here to raise us in freedom and democracy so that we could thrive and learn. And that we did. We learned how to listen to and respect different ways of thinking, different nationalities, and different political ideologies.Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/16/1582647/gloria-estefans-speech-at-fundraiser.html#ixzz0lrPoLgBf

Cubans caught between generations

My nephew Julian turned 16 this past week. When I called on Wednesday to wish him a happy birthday I told him he was now an adult. This is it, I said, childhood is far behind; adolescence is over. You are now a grown up.

Along with the previous two article I posted, this one focuses mainly on the idea that undocumented workers are filing tax returns more in Miami, and the was in which this has affected the community.

White American's may become a Minority

http://cbs4.com/national/whites.minority.status.2.1550229.html

An intersting article on the census and how white's may become the minority race in the upcoming year.

~Holly Bartow

Along with the issue of the census, this is an article that juxtaposes the idea of immigration along with the horrific nature of the earthquake in Haiti. It explores how we have taken action against "undocumented" Haitians' who have fled Haiti, but do nothing against those from Cuba just because of the political situation between Cuba and the US. An interesting piece.

Arizona May Criminalize Presence Of Illegal Immigrants

http://www.justnews.com/news/22718876/detail.html

Just a cool article on Arizona that popped up on a Miami newspaper.

"The proposal would make Arizona the only state to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants through an expansion of its trespassing law. It also would require police to try to determine people's immigration status when there's reasonable suspicion they are in the country illegally. An estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants live in the state."

A new poll finds no clamor for change in U.S. Cuba policy

A new poll found that there is little clamor for change in the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

Forty percent of Americans say the Cuba embargo should remain in place while 36 percent want it ended, and nearly half say they wouldn't visit the island even if allowed, according to a BBC/Harris Poll released Tuesday.

Undocumented worker numbers decline in Miami

http://cbs4.com/local/economy.undocumented.workers.2.1490602.html

Just a brief article stating some facts about how Florida is the only state to see a decrease in the number of undocumented workers. I thought the article was pretty sarcastic, but that could just be me.

Affirmative Action in California

http://www.justnews.com/news/22583158/detail.html

While this isn't necessarily an article that deals with Miami, this article came up on a Miami website, and I think that it is important enough and relevant enough that it should be posted and discussed.

That being said, this is an article about a lawsuit that is trying to reappeal Prop 209, which ended Affirmative Action in Calfiornia's school.

The article goes on to discuss statistics that startled me, about how underrepresented certain groups are in the UC system. I think that this article is relevant because it discusses Latinos in the higher education system.

Colleges use Spanish in application Materials

http://www.justnews.com/education/22491824/detail.html

While this article does not solely focus on Miami, I thought it is an article that deserves some recognition. It's about how US colleges are trying to attract Latino students be putting their application and financial aid pages in spanish. At the University of Florida, which has a "60 percent Hispanic enrollment", they lack the resources to add a Spanish page option. In conclusion of the article, they said that mostly the Spanish option pages were for the parents of Latino students.

Miami to Observe International Day for the Cuban Exile

http://cbs4.com/cuba/cuban.exiles.recognition.2.1505717.html

I thought this article was cool. It's about how Cuban exiles have played an integral part in making Miami what it is today, and how the Miami-Dade County Board declared February 24 as 'Cuban Exile Day'. Which is really cool that Cuban exiles are being officially honored for their part in Miami's history.

Immigration talks between Havanna and US

http://cbs4.com/cuba/US.Cuba.Immigration.2.1506386.html

This is a really good and really recent article about the current state of immigration between Cuba and US. To quote the article, "Cuba said its deputy minister of foreign affairs, Dagoberto Rodriguez, met with Craig Kelly, a deputy assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs and the highest ranking American official to come to the island in years".

There was also conversation later in the article about the exchange of prisoners convicted of spying. Cuba is holding an American convicted of spying, and Cuba supposedly will give him back in exchange for five Cubans convicted of spying that have been held by the US since the 1960's.

Trial for exile Luis Posada

http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/02/22/1492970/trial-for-posada-continues-to.html

This is a very interesting article which I think show an interesting POV between Cuba's and America's political relationship. The article is about a Cuban exile who, in 1997, placed bombs in Havana that lead to the death of one person, and the injury of others. But what makes this case so fascinating is that there are a lot of sealed documents within the case, which have lead to this trial being dragged out for over 10 years.
